Striped Skunk bushy tail in Bosque del Apache

I spotted this Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) hunting in the marsh at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. He seemed aware that I was there, but — thanks to my long lens — I never came close enough to threaten him. And vice versa. To ensure a quick departure if needed, I stayed safely in my car.

This beautiful but threatening carnivore is common across most of the United States.
